What is M1 Finance?

M1 Finance is a great online brokerage for investors who may be starting with a smaller amount of capital. The primary features of M1 that make it an attractive choice are their $0 commission structure and ability to buy partial shares. M1 also offers ‘expert pies’ that can be used to invest based on risk tolerance rather than picking stocks yourself.

M1 Finance is a Chicago based online financial services company. It is also known as a robo-advisor and is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a broker-dealer and is also a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). These two registrations are what make them a trusted brokerage and held to similar standards as other large investment banks.

Getting Started with M1 Finance

To get started investing with M1 all you need to do is create a pie. A pie is your portfolio and a slice of your pie is the company stock you own. You can add as many slices to your pie as you would like as long as the allocation total adds up to 100%. You may need to add or subtract percentages from slices that are already in the pie to make room for a new addition.

As mentioned earlier expert pies are also available and can be inserted as a slice into your own pie. Think of it as a nested pie > a pie inside of a pie. This is great for investors who may want to make some stock picks on their own but also have some picks from the pros.
